What are the Different Types of Cotton?

Although we love to call a fabric as just ‘Cotton’, there are many different types of cotton yarns. The following are the cotton yarns that are most commonly found in T Shirts

Combed Cotton Yarn

Combed cotton is one of the best cotton material for T Shirts. Naturally, its very popular. Combed cotton yarn is the process of refining the cotton yarn by straitening the cotton fibers, and getting rid of short strands. Thus, Combed cotton yarn ends up being softer, smoother and stronger (increasing durability). Combed Cotton Yarn costs more than other cotton yarns.

Ring-spun Cotton Yarn

Ring-spun cotton is produced by continuously spinning, lengthening and thinning the cotton fiber. The spinning makes the short hairs of the cotton stand out, resulting in a stronger yarn that is significantly softer. The number of times the cotton yarn has been spun, the softer it is.

Carded Cotton Yarn

Carded Cotton Yarn is produced by using two machine (or hand) cards. This carding process is the spinning of the cotton fibers. The cotton fibers are lengthened, separated, cleaned and assembled into a large rope of fibers. The fibers are then lined up to be spun into a yarn.

Difference between Heavy Weight Shirts, Medium Weight Shirts and Light Weight Shirts

There are so many features within a shirt, it is easy to miss one of the most important one: the weight of the shirt.

Here is the comparison between the 3 types of shirts, categorized by their weight:

Heavy Weight Shirts:

A Heavy Weight shirt is one that weights 6 oz or greater.

The fabric is thick, and the shirt feels a little heavy (in a good way).

It feels warmer than a light weight shirt, however this does not always make it a bad choice for the summer.

Nonetheless, many people prefer these shirts in winter.

These shirts also make a good layer of clothing on the windier days.

A Heavy Weight shirt may or may not be breathable, so make sure to read the product description.

This is because a breathability of shirt is determined by the amount of space between the fabric, and the fabric type.

Usually, Heavy Weight shirts are resistant to shrinkage. In Stores, they usually cost a few dollars more than a light weight shirt.

However, if durability is an important factor, then in the long run they are more economical than light weight shirts.

An addition benefit is that the stitching is usually sturdy for Heavy Weight Shirts.

Light Weight Shirts:

A Light Weight shirt is one that is less than 5 oz.

It is usually preferred during summer season. Usually are breathable and make a good shirt for exercise.

However, unless a good quality fabric is used, these can tear as well as shrink much more easily compared to a Heavy Weight shirt.

The manufacturer of the product has to take extra steps in order to ensure that these shirts are of good quality.

One reason people like light weight t shirts are because they feels quite soft on the skin.

Also, these shirts are usually body fitting as well as see through.

If one wears this shirt in winter or windy days, it would be a good idea to bring a jacket.

Medium Weight Shirts:

Medium Weight shirts weighs somewhere between 5 oz – 6 oz.

As you might guess, medium weight shirts have the best of the both worlds!

They are great for fall and spring, although ofcourse they will keep you a little warm in winter and a little cooler in summer

Overall, their biggest advantage is that if you want most of the benefits of a light weight shirt, but the durability of heavy weight, then this shirt would make a good choice.

What does Oz mean in shirts?

Oz is short for Ounce. It is a measuring unit for Imperial System used in United States.

Even though companies write 5oz or 6oz weight for their shirts in product description, what they really mean is 5 ounce per yard square or 6 ounce per yard square.

A 6 oz shirt is around 200 gsm

A 5 oz shirt is around 170 gsm

GSM means grams per meters squared.

It is a measuring unit for Metric system (now known as International System of Units) used in majority of the world.

This is why you might come across gsm quite often.

You can find an excellent calculator at this website that helps you convert from gsm to oz, and vice versa.

Fun Fact: United States, Myanmar and Liberia are the only countries that do not use International System of Units (SI)

How should you determine the weight of the shirt when purchasing it?

If you are planning on purchasing a shirt, see the weight of the shirt in the description.

Many product descriptions usually mention the weight in ounce (oz) in USA.

If the seller hasn’t mentioned the weight of the shirt, just message them and ask

Sellers usually love answering customer’s questions!

Although it can be challenging, sometimes just by looking at the picture you can see and guess the thickness of the shirt.

Zoom in on the picture if possible to see if you can see through it.

If you are purchasing a shirt in a physical store, just tough one layer of the shirt and see how it feels.

If you can see through it, then it is probably light weight.

Once you have seen enough light weight, medium weight and heavy weight shirts, you will be able to determine the weight of the shirt just by looking at it or else feeling it.

Does the weight of the shirt determines whether it is Moisture Wicking?

No. Moisture Wicking is a fabric type that has been treated with certain chemicals.

Regardless of the weight of the shirt, a moisture wicking shirt should be able to get rid of the sweat from the inner part of the fabric towards the outer surface.

You can read more about Moisture Wicking here.

Conclusion

So, it appears that the weight of the shirt should be one of the number 1 factors you should be looking for in a shirt.

Depending on the season, your activity and your preference, your shopping analysis should consist of choosing different weight of the shirt based on different criteria.

Pro Tip: If durability is your top priority, go for Heavy Weight shirts. However, if a Light Weight shirt is made of good quality material, then you can make an exception.

What is Moisture Wicking and Why is Everyone Talking About it?

Moisture Wicking Fabric

Nowadays, so many clothing items mention that they use moisture wicking fabric, but what does moisture wicking mean??

Moisture wicking is a technology used in certain fabrics to get rid of the sweat from the skin as well as the clothing.

It takes the sweat that the skin produces, and through the use of capillaries, moves the sweat to the outer surface of the clothing.

This helps keep the skin dry. It also keeps the cloth dry.

It’s very useful for socks, working out or any outdoor activity since it keeps the skin (and body) dry.

Its also pretty comfortable since your shirts or socks don’t stick to your skin.

How Moisture-Wicking Fabrics Work?

Polyester, as you know, is a synthetic fiber. It’s made using chemicals.

Scientists engineer the moisture wicking fabric by adding capillaries to the polyester fabric that moves the sweat from internal surface to the outer surface.

When the sweat is touches the internal side of the cloth, the liquid pressure forces the sweat into the spaces between the capillaries in the fabric.

This in turn creates capillary force which forces the liquid out to the outer surface.

The air then helps with drying the outer surface.

This is why moisture wicking fabric only absorbs 0.4% of the water (sweat) where as cotton absorbs 7% of the liquid!

This is why a lot of people avoid 100% cotton shirts/socks for working out, especially if they don’t like getting sweaty.

Fun fact: An average human has anywhere between 2 million to 4 million sweat glands!

How is Moisture Wicking Fabric different from Moisture Absorbing Fabric?

Moisture wicking fabric does not absorb any moisture.

However, Moisture Absorbing fabric (such as cotton or wool) absorb the sweat and stops it from reaching the outer surface as much as possible.

Since wicking fabric does not absorb water, it would be a terrible idea to wear a moisture wicking undershirt.

This is because an undershirt would then transfer the sweat from your body to your outer shirt, creating stains and ruining the shirt!

Fun fact: Humans, primates (apes/monkeys) and horses produce the highest levels of perspiration / sweat among Mammals!

A lot of animals inhale air to keep themselves cool.

In Summer, sometimes I wish I could do that too!

Why is Moisture Wicking Fabric important?

It helps keep your body dry, provides comfort and reduces the risks of infection.

This is why some Diabetic Socks are created with moisture wicking feature.

Moisture wicking would not help you keep cool, but it will help you keep dry.

Common Natural Fibers:

  • Cotton
  • Wool

Common Synthetic Fibers:

  • Polyester
  • Nylon
  • Microfiber
  • Spandex

Breathable vs Moisture wicking

Breathable fabrics usually have looser knitting and lighter weight in order to let air in easily, as well as let sweat out.

As you can imagine, this really helps keep the body cool.

Cotton is usually more breathable than polyester.

Moisture wicking fabric only lets the sweat out. It does not necessarily let the air in.

However, Poly Cotton (or Cotton Blend) fabrics can mix and match the properties of Polyester and Cotton.

You can read the details about breathable fabric here.

What is Cotton?

Cotton is a natural fabric grown in plants.

Cotton does not wick away moisture. Cotton is really good at absorbing the sweat or moisture.

This is why cotton under shirts are the best choice for dress shirts.

However, Cotton can be made into breathable fabric if the knitting is looser, and the shirt is lighter (around 5 oz or less).

Heavy Weight shirts are around 6 oz per yard square.

Cotton is great for casual activities and for sensitive skin. However, it is nowhere as durable or long lasting as polyester

What is Polyester?

Polyester is a synthetic fabric made from chemicals. It was developed in the 1940s.

Polyester is very resistant to water, shrinkage and tear.

Polyester usually helps with moisture wicking alot

It also helps keep a person warm, thus it is really useful in winters.

Clothes made from polyester are highly durable and long lasting.

What is Poly Cotton or Cotton Blend?

Any mixture of Polyester and Cotton is considered cotton blend.

The most common mixtures are 80% Cotton 20% Polyester, 66% Cotton 33% Polyester and 50% Cotton and 50% Polyester.

Clothing made from poly cotton materials are usually long lasting, highly durable.

This is why a lot of shirts these days are made using cotton blend material.

Its properties are somewhere between 100% Cotton and 100% Polyester.

You can read more on Polyester vs Cotton vs Poly Cotton here.

Conclusion

Moisture wicking fabric helps keep the skin dry by moving the sweat from the inner surface of clothing (that is touching the skin) towards the outer surface of the clothing.

Moisture wicking fabric dries at a faster rate since it absorbs only 0.4% of moisture.

It is great for keeping the skin dry and comfortable.

How to Measure Sleeve Length

Tall Long Sleeve Shirt Sleeve Length

Every time I shop for clothes online, and see that awesome shirt we want, but it has all these sizes to choose from? Sure, I know my size, or so I think! Every brand has its own sizes! So I decided to write a guide as to how to measure shirt sleeve length:

Method #1)

Start from the center of the neck and measure all the way down to the wrist.

Example: Tall Long Sleeve Shirt

Method # 2)

Some companies like to measure shirt sleeve length starting from shoulder all the way down to the wrist.

In this example, we will look at a 3/4th sleeve raglan shirt:

Here is an example size chart for method # 2:

Styllion Size Chart
Size Chart for 3/4th Sleeve Length (using method # 2)

In a perfect world, we would have standardized size chart. But that is very very challenging task. There are so many different fittings for clothing, and each company tailors clothes for their particular audience (out of 7 billion people). Thus there are many different ways to measure sizes, as well as different measurements.
